میں تیرا ہوں اور تُو میرا قرض دار اے دوست
تُو دل شکستہ، میں آدم سے بیزار اے دوست
Transliteration:
Main tera hoon aur tu mera qarazdaar ay dost
Tu dil-shakista, main aadam se bezaar ay dost
Translation:
1. On friendship & shared suffering
I belong to you, and you are indebted to me, O friend, you are heartbroken, and I too am weary of mankind (Adam), O friend.

جو بانٹتا پھرتا ہے سب میں دل جمعی کے لمحے
خود سے بھی کر لیجیو الفت کبھی کبھار اے دوست
Transliteration:
Jo baant’ta phirta hai sab mein dil-jamai ke lamhe
Khud se bhi kar lijio ulfat kabhi kabhaar ay dost
Translation:
2. On self-love
You who go around distributing peace of mind to everyone, should also love yourself, at least once in a while, O friend.

عجب تماشے کا ہر سو ہے اک منظر بپا اب
بشر ہے کتنا ہی سنگ دل، خوں خوار اے دوست
Transliteration:
Ajab tamashay ka har soo hai ik manzar bapa ab
Bashar hai kitna hi sang-dil, khoo’nkhaar ay dost
Translation:
3. On the cruelty of the world
A strange spectacle of chaos is unfolding everywhere,man has become so bloodthirsty and cruel, O friend.

ہم کیوں کسی کا برا سوچیں، کیوں برا چاہیں
تیرا نہ میرا ہے ایسا کوئی معیار اے دوست
Transliteration:
Hum kyun kisi ka bura sochen,,,, kyun bura chahen?
Tera na mera hai aisa koi mayar ay dost
Translation:
4. On ethics & character
Why should we think ill of anyone, or wish them harm?Neither your standards nor mine allow such a thing, O friend.

یہ آستین کے سانپ ہیں، ڈس ہی لیں گے تجھ کو
امید رکھ، پر ذرا سا رہنا خبردار اے دوست
Transliteration:
Ye aasteen ke saanp hain, das hi len gay tujh ko
Umeed rakh,,, par zara sa rehna khabardar ay dost
Translation:
5. On caution
These are snakes in the grass, they will eventually bite; keep your hopes alive, but remain very cautious, O friend.

جب بھی احباب کی گنتی آئی، سب گنے گئے
ہو نہ سکا پر سعدیہ کا اب تک شمار اے دوست
Transliteration:
Jab bhi ahbaab ki ginti aayi, sab gine gaye
Ho na saka par Sadia ka ab tak shumaar ay dost
Translation:
6. On being unnoticed (the signature verse)
When the friends were counted, everyone was included and cherished. But till this day, Sadia (I) could never be counted among them, O friend.
